Toxicity test is an increasingly disrupted crochet sequence.

Left: Grand Mutator (Base 3 bag variants 1-14) 2006 installed in Behemoth at Danielle Arnaud 2007

Starting with a basic pattern for a string bag, each sucessive round of the Grand Mutator adds a level of deviation from the starting patten. This progressive mutation relates to Darwinian evolution where forms are considered to change due to mistakes in coding over time.

Variants to the form include crochet hook size, change in texture or colour of yarn, skipped stitches, increase or decrease of loops per stitch...

Here the separate rounds have been pinned to float about 2cm from the wall in a pattern relating to the growth of mould or other fractal-type forms in nature.

Another reference for this work are the toxicity tests performed on spiders in the 1960's to determine the levels of toxicity of recreational drugs. (see next page)
